OTTO OGGETTI – A Brief History of Italian Design Told Through Eight Objects

The 5th edition of Italian Design Day (IDD) will take place in 100 cities all over the world. The theme chosen for this edition, Design and Materials: The New Sustainability of “Made in Italy,” will be expressed with particular attention to sustainability by 100 “Italian design ambassadors” – architects, designers, academics, business people, critics, communicators – who will bring us the best of Italian design.

The Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco is pleased to present OTTO OGGETTI – A Brief History of Italian Design Told Through Eight Objects that Changed the World, a virtual master class by design “ambassador” Chiara Alessi focusing on the history of eight objects that changed industrial design forever.

In collaboration with the Italian Consulate General of San Francisco.

Chiara Alessi: Born in 1981, Chiara Alessi is a leading authority on material culture and design, about which she writes, teaches, and curates exhibits. She is a lecturer at The Polytechnic University of Milan and is the author of the essays, Dopo gli anni Zero, Il nuovo design italiano (Laterza, 2014), Design senza designer (Laterza, 2016), Le caffettiere dei miei bisnonni (Utet, 2018) e Prince. Il corpo del figlio with Marius Ani Oulakolé (People, 2020). Her series launched on Twitter in 2020 in the midst of lockdown, #designinpigiama, now numbers around 90 episodes with millions of viewings. It has provided a forum for a growing community to come together, adding historical details and personal anecdotes to our collective history. In 2021, she published Tante care cose. Gli oggetti che ci hanno cambiato la vita. Chiara Alessi is a direct descendent of the Bialetti and Alessi families. Her great grandfather Alfonso Bialetti is considered the inventor of the Moka coffee pot, and her great grandfather Giovanni Alessi is the founder of the hundred-year-old Alessi housewares company.

Italian Design Day in the World is a project launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and it is the result of a frutiful team work of MiBACT, MISE, ICE Agenzia, Confindustria, Associazione per il Disegno Insdustriale (ADI), Fondazione ADI-Compasso d’Oro, Federlegno Arredo, Salone del Mobile Milano and Triennale Milano.
