Any teacher wishing to teach Italian at a public middle or high school in California must pass two parts of the Italian CSET. The Italian CSET is the state exam that serves to establish core competency in Italian for candidates in a single-subject credentialing program or for teachers who wish to add Italian to their existing credential.
Candidates for the Italian CSET must register for and pass the following two sub-tests:
Sub-test I & II (General Linguistics, Literature, History, Geography and Culture) is offered by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) by appointment. To see schedule & to register for the Italian CSET Sub-test I & II click here.
Sub-test III (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) is only offered by Fondazione Italia. This portion of the Italian CSET is only offered two times a year and must be taken in person.
For more information on the test including test structure, overview, sample questions, and to register click here.
Please note: Passing the Italian CSET does not provide you with a single-subject credential. Passage of the Italian CSET only allows you to teach Italian in a middle or high school once you have completed a single-subject credentialing program. It is the responsibility of the candidate to make sure they have completed all the requirements for a single-subject credential by visiting the CCTC website.
