The IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca is a Public University School for Higher Education and Research with a special statute that focuses on the analysis of economic, societal, technological and cultural systems.
The IMT School offers two interdisciplinary doctoral programs in Cognitive and Cultural Systems and in Systems Science, with the common mission of fostering interdisciplinary research and benefiting from the complementarity of several methodologies derived from subjects such as economics, management, engineering, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, cognitive and social neuroscience, archeology, art history, and analysis and cultural heritage management.
Each doctoral program is divided into tracks which provide students with specialized training that is closely linked to the activities of the research unit with which they are affiliated.

IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca’s multidisciplinary PhD Programs offer a unique and characteristic patrimony of competences within the broad framework of the analysis and management of a plurality of systems. IMT School attracts bright students, young researchers and professors through competitive and transparent procedures at an international level.
The scholarships are fully-funded for up to four years (no tuition fees), with a possibility of graduating after the third year.
The admitted 37 candidates will also receive a scholarship (which will amount to 15,343.28 € gross/year), free housing in the School’s residential campus and free daily access to the canteen and library.
Moreover, this year the IMT School offers two additional scholarships:
- 1 for the PhD Program in “Cognitive and Cultural Systems”, track in “Cognitive, Computational and Social Neurosciences”, funded within the ERC Starting Grant project “Tweaking dreams: non-invasive modulation of the level and content of mental activity during sleep” (“TweakDreams”);
- 1 for the Program in “Systems Science”, track in “Economics, Networks and Business Analytics”, funded as part of the training and research activities on the topics covered by the Neuroscience Lab (NS LAB), the research laboratory joint venture between Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center SpA and the IMT School.
Candidates can apply if they receive their undergraduate degree no later than October, 31st 2021.
Classes will start on November 2nd, 2021.
